North Shields 1 Ryhope Colliery Welfare 0 (29/09/2018) – Solo Ryan Carr strike sees off Ryhope

A goal in the first half was enough to give the Robins a battling 1-0 win over in-form Ryhope CW.

Carr scored his third goal in four games late into the first half to give the Robins a deserved lead at the break.

And despite several chances for the visitors in the second period, the hosts held on for their second win in three days.

After a windy opening couple of minutes, the Robins started to apply pressure on the Ryhope defence with Adam Forster finding Sean McRoberts on the wing, however, the attacker was unlucky when he couldn’t quite get his foot behind the cross.

Two minutes later, the visitors tried their luck on goal when James Ellis struck the ball on the edge of the area, only for Greg Purvis to pull off a smart save.

Jack Donnison was causing all sorts of problems for the opposition defenders and in the 18th minute, he delivered an inviting cross into the box. Unfortunatly, there wasn’t a red shirt in the box to fire the ball home.

With the wind beginning to pick up, both teams were struggling to maintain possession of the ball. In the 23rd minute, Forster was unlucky to not quite be able to get on the end of a beautiful Donnison cross.

However, the closest either team came to opening the scoring was in the 30th minute when Ryhope striker Craig Ellison rose highest, only to narrowly miss out on heading the visitors in front; with the ball skimming wide.

Four minutes later, the Robins finally took the lead when a Paul Robinson corner was poorly defended, allowing Carr to collect the ball on the angle before rifling his shot into the bottom corner of the net; giving the hosts the lead at the break.

The second half saw Ryhope dig deep in search of the equalising goal and if not for some fine defending from the Shields back line, plus one or two good saves from Purvis, they could very well have turned this game on its head.

James Ellis in particular was causing the home defence a few issues and in the 48th minute, some smart defending from Kevin Hughes was needed to prevent the Ryhope attacker from equalising straight from the restart.

However, the Robins dug deep to see out the game and earn another three points which sees them solidify their mid table position.
