Marc Nash made 5 changes from last week’s defeat to Runcorn Linnets in the FA Trophy.
They started the stronger of the two sides in the blustery conditions that prevailed throughout the afternoon.
In the 7th minute, Dan Wilson had the first clear cut chance as he was played in and fired an effort goal bound which stung the palms of Michael Roxborough.
Moments later Paul Van Zandvliet rattled the woodwork with an effort sneaking in at the back post.
At the other end, the visitors had a golden opportunity on the counter to open the scoring as Jack Normanton broke on the counter only to side foot his effort wide of the goal.
Shields continued to press and carve out opportunities, JJ Chrisp’s cross flicked on by Brad Hird which zipped just too far past Liam Doyle running in at the back post.
Connor Oliver picked up a yellow card for a challenge on halfway in an attempt to curtail a Brighouse counter.
Shields were in again this time, Dan Wilson squared the ball across the penalty area, unfortunately its path was behind Dan Turner in the centre.
A Paul Van Zandvliet cross forced a corner for the Robins as the Brighouse defence could only slice it out of play.
Finlay Hodgson made a brilliant point blank save to keep the visitors out.
In the 30th minute, Connor Oliver was forced off through injury and replaced by David Palmer.
Cam Cunningham was finding plenty of space in midfield and able to drive attacks forward towards the Brighouse goal.
Cunningham fired a tame effort from 25 yards out which was dealt with comfortably by Micahel Roxborough, moments later he rose highest inside the area to head a Paul Van Zandvliet cross goal bound, which almost snuck across the line.
Dan Wilson then narrowly headed an effort over the top as Shields continued to look for a breakthrough before half-time.
Dan Turner found himself on the end of two challenges moments apart which resulted in cautions for Corey Gregory and Javelle Clarke for Brighouse.
Half time was upon us Shields very much in the driving seat, using the blustery conditions to their advantage with large spells of possession and good attacking movements, Brighouse sitting back and defending showing glimpses of how dangerous they can be on the counter.
The second half started in a spritely manner with both teams making scrappy challenges to win back possession in the middle of the park.
The visitors, with the wind behind them, had the first free kick of the second half which sailed harmlessly high and wide out of play. Moments later Finley Hodgson was on hand to keep out Javelle Clarke one-on-one.
Despite playing against the wind and it seemed to pick up, Shields continued to press and playing attacking football, Brad Hird found himself open in the box only to mis-hit his effort on goal.
The pressure Shields were applying won them back possession deep in Brighouse territory forcing a corner.
On the hour mark there was a penalty claim as Paul Van Zandvliet appeared to be pulled down the ground with his back to goal inside the penalty area. The referee dismissed the claim and awarded a corner.
Shields continued to knock on the door in search of a goal.
At the other end, JJ Chrisp was on hand with defensive duties to get a crucial touch to clear the Robins lines.
Regan Paterson replaced Dan Turner in attack with 20 minutes left on the clock.
The visitors had a chance, the ball cut back to the penalty spot only for poor communication between three Brighouse players to deny them getting off a shot on goal.
The ball collided with the referee on the edge of the Robins box resulting in the visitors having a drop ball in a dangerous area, luckily for Shields it was a poor effort dealt with comfortably by Hodgson.
Dan Wilson once again the attack for the Robins overhit his cross into the penalty area.
David Palmer was cautioned for a challenge in an attempt to break down a Brighouse attack.
Antonio Agosthino was the Robins third substitute of the afternoon replacing Dan Wilson as they looked to have one last roll of the dice in search of a goal with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Cam Cunningham was taken out giving the Robins a freekick but unfortunately were not able to capitalize.
The ball once again collided with the referee, this time in favor of the Robins.
With the game coming to close Liam Doyle found himself in behind the Brighouse defence and flashed the ball across the Brighouse penalty which only required a touch but evaded one.
Brighouse could have taken home all three points when Myron Gibbons headed over from 12 yards out.
The referee brough the proceedings to an end leaving the Robins frustrated as the performance and attacking play deserved more. Brighouse the happier of the two teams leaving the north east with a point.
Some day soon the robins are going to hit a side for 4 or 5 goals there making chances but not converting like they should be. One team soon is going to sit down after the fame scratching there heads wondering what the he’ll just happened to us today. One day soon.
