Shields Progress in the FA Vase

North Shields advance to the next round of the FA Vase after they defeated Whickham 5-3 on penalties at the Daren Persson Stadium.

The visitors came closest early on when Mark Fitzpatrick missed a golden opportunity after getting behind the North Shields backline.

A bizarre red card was overturned during the first half-an-hour of play, following a clash between the referee and Dale Burrell.

Both teams had the ball in the back of the net in the second-half but Dan Wilson and Zak Atkinson’s goals were chalked offside.

The game finished 0-0 leading to a penalty shoot-out where a miss from Atkinson and a converted spot-kick from Gary Ormston sealed the victory for the hosts.

Conor Newton and Jack Robson were both unavailable coming into this fixture.

Whickham started the match brighter with Fitzpatrick latching onto a long ball from Michael Hoganson, but his half-volley was sliced into the side netting.

North Shields then came back into the game, with Wilson poking the ball just wide from a free-kick after 24 minutes.

Just before the half-hour mark, Dale Burrell was then shown a red card for rushing to close down an attacker and clashing into the referee.

However, the midfielder’s sending off was then changed to a yellow card after liaising with one of his assistants but from the referee’s tumble, he could not continue due to a spinal injury meaning the first-half lasted 70 minutes following the search for a new official.

The home side thought they took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when Wilson took the ball down from a cross and found the back of the net but with the linesman judging the forward offside.

Scott Robson nearly broke the deadlock after 70 minutes with a slick counter-attack leading to the winger to be through on goal but with Marshall making an excellent stop.

Atkinson then followed Wilson in having his goal ruled out after sneaking into an offside position following a flick on from a free-kick landing to the back post where the striker slid to put the ball in the back of the net.

Penalties then followed with a perfect first six spot-kicks before Atkinson saw his saved and Ormston stepped up to slide the ball home and send the home fans ballistic.
