Seaham Red Star 2 North Shields 0 (02/03/2019) – Robins second best as Seaham take all three points

The Robins were second best at the Ferguson Motor Repairs Stadium as a Michael Chilton double gave Seaham Red Star all three points.

A blustery first half saw the hosts take a half time lead when Chilton powered his looping header into the back of the net.

Chilton added a second goal for Seaham straight after the restart, giving the Robins a mountain to climb.

And despite a late chance for Gareth Bainbridge, the Robins couldn’t get back into the game and suffered their third straight league defeat.

The visitors started the game brightly as good work from Paul Robinson released Jordan Summerly through on goal in the second minute, only for Seaham keeper Chris Bannon to block his effort.

After the midweek win over West Allotment, Shields seemed determined to take control of this game and in the 10th minute, a Ryan Carr header flew millimeters over the crossbar.

With Craig Spooner missing for the Robins, Jack Cooper filled his spot in central midfield and the young attacker looked dangerous early on, with his effort in the 17th minute not far off target.

One minute later, the hosts were given a golden chance to take the lead when Dan Wilson tumbled over in the box, following a Gary Ormston challenge, with the referee pointing straight to the spot. With Wilson stepping up to take the penalty himself, Michael Robinson guessed correctly by diving to his right and parrying the ball to safety.

This penalty miss seemed to galvinise Seaham and in the 26th minute, Chilton followed up on a Wilson attempt to power his looping header over the keeper and into the corner of the net.

The Star had the bit between their teeth now, with Bobby Taylor causing a threat down the left-hand side. In the 28th minute, his rasping shot needed expertly tipping over by Robinson.

It was now all Seaham as the Robins struggled to deal with the windy conditions. Efforts from Wilson and Star captain David Robinson in the 34th and 38th minute were both off target, denying the hosts a second goal before half time.

Whatever Seaham manager Mark Collingwood said to his side at the break must have had an effect as in the 47th minute, Chilton added a second goal after finding himself in acres of space with the ball at his feet.

Despite the setback, the Robins kept pushing forwards and in the 51st minute, Sean McRoberts arching freekick was well collected by the Seaham shot-stopper.

With the Robins pushing further forwards, the hosts were able to exploit the extra space. Taylor once again tried his luck at the goal from a freekick but his effort curled agonisingly wide of the goal.

Sensing an opportunity to put this game to bed, former Robin striker Wilson had a great chance to add a third in the 61st minute but after his pinpoint turn, his effort was blocked by the onrushing Shields keeper. The rebound did fall to Taylor but his effort was blocked by a diving Robins defender.

With the clock winding down, the hosts kept pressing for a third goal and captain Robinson had a great chance in the 82nd minute when he fired a curling effort at the visiting goal. However, the Robins keeper was more than a match and made another diving save.

With desperation setting in, Shields were trying everything they could to break down the Seaham defence. Substitute Gareth Bainbridge had a brilliant chance in the 83rd minute after an impressive touch from Cam Cunningham, however, Bannon was impressive in stopping the ball from getting past him.
