North Shields were defeated 2-1 in the FA Cup preliminary round replay against Consett AFC.
An even contest throughout most of the game, the Robins took the lead via Lee Mason early into the second half, but Consett came from behind to win the game after a ten minute pause due to floodlight issues.
There was box-office action in the opening ten minutes as both ends saw some huge moments. First, Disaster almost struck in the opening minutes when a mistake from Elliott when attempting to claim a free kick meant Isaac Walker, positioned just behind Elliott, had a chance in front of an open net, albeit from an almost impossible angle. His effort smashed into the side netting. The shot-stopper soon made up for it with a superb save after ex-Gateshead forward Oli Thompson searched for the bottom right corner from 25 yards.
Down the other end Ogbewe, who has had a fantastic start to the season, then struck the ball on the half volley from the edge of the box, which fizzed just wide of the post to his frustration. Brian Smith’s side then came close to an opening via several corners, with Dan Wilson’s header over the bar concluding a hectic opening ten minutes.
Midway through the half, Charlie Lowes was forced off with a knee injury for Carter Millmore, who slotted straight into the right-back position, Dan Wilson had another effort soon after, turning his man and firing goalwards in the box however the keeper comfortably saved.
Towards the end, Gibraltarian international Jesse Gomez found himself 25-yards out with a clear sight of goal, but his ambitious effort was wellied far over the goalframe.
HALF-TIME: North Shields 0-0 Consett AFC
North Shields had some success down the wing in the second half, eventually scoring when a cross from the left side found Lee Mason with only one defender in the box with him, after readjusting his feet, he slammed the ball home with his second touch before wheeling away to the corner in celebration.
North Shields enjoyed stome attacking momentum after the opening, but an issue with the floodlights meant there was a 15 minute break in the play, after which the visitors began to grow back into the game, eventually they bagged an equaliser through Donny Holdsworth from close range, substitue Marc Costello headed the ball across to him, and the unmarked forward made no mistake on the volley.
Within just a few minutes it was two, some nice play in the final third culminated with Gomez recieving the ball from Holdsworth in the box, a good first touch took the ball past Hall and a deadly second meant the ball rolled into the bottom right corner for 2-1. A gutting end for the Robins after a valiant effort.
