North Shields fought back to earn a deserved point on the road as Nelson Ogbewe’s stunning second-half volley cancelled out Sam Johnson’s opener in an entertaining 1-1 draw away to Newton Aycliffe.
The hosts made the brighter start and almost took the lead after just four minutes when Jack Clarkson was slipped through on goal, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.
Callum Elliott, one of last season’s standout players, was then called into action in the 15th minute, producing a superb one-handed save to tip Charlie Dawson’s powerful strike over the bar and behind for a corner.
The home side continued to threaten. Ryan Carr’s attempted clearance was intercepted by Aycliffe’s Andrew Nelson, who fired wide before curling another effort just past Elliott’s post moments later.
The hosts came close again in the 22nd minute as Sam Johnson showed neat footwork inside the penalty area, but Euan Anderson reacted brilliantly to block the forward’s effort.
The Robins gradually began to settle into the game and created their first major opportunity three minutes before the interval. After delivering a number of dangerous crosses throughout the opening half, Carter Milmore finally found Dan Wilson, who rose highest to meet the ball, but his header flew over the crossbar.
Further chances followed just before the break, Elliott Smith whipped an out-swinging delivery towards the back post. Carr headed the ball down from a tight angle, but it bounced into the side netting as the keeper covered his near post.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Shields broke quickly through Ben Sampson, who did well to hold the ball up before finding Wilson, but the striker could only fire over the bar.
HALF-TIME: Newton Aycliffe 0-0 North Shields
The second half began with a moment of panic for the visitors as James Sloan’s awkward backward header almost gifted the hosts a chance, but Elliott reacted quickly to race from his box and clear the danger.
Newton Aycliffe made their pressure count in the 53rd minute. Andrew Nelson burst down the wing following some good link-up play at the centre-line before drilling a low cross into the six-yard box, where Sam Johnson arrived to calmly slot home from close range.
The hosts almost doubled their advantage seven minutes later when Johnson found himself with time inside the box, but he fired over the bar. Shields immediately responded at the other end as Lee Mason, making his 200th appearance for the club, tried his luck from distance, however the ball was comfortably saved.
It was around this time that the momentum, which had previously been almost entirely in the hosts’ favour, began to swing the other way. Sampson rifled a shot over the bar shortly after Ogbewe also headed over.
Stephen Hall was introduced for Wilson with just under a quarter of an hour remaining, and the substitution had an immediate impact as the Robins found an equaliser only a minute later.
A free-kick was only partially cleared into the path of Ogbewe, who produced a spectacular first-time volley that flew beyond the goalkeeper and into the net to bring Shields level.
Buoyed by the goal, The Robins pushed forward in search of a winner. Hall made an intelligent run in behind before being picked out by an excellent long pass from Lish as Shields piled on the pressure during the closing stages.
Neither side could find a decisive breakthrough, however, as the points were shared after an evenly contested encounter.
