EBAC Northern League Division One
North Shields 3 – 1 Redcar Athletic
‘Robins inflict first league defeat in emphatic style’
With Saturday’s brilliant win in the bag, Brian Smith’s side were met with another stern test as Redcar Athletic were the visitors to the Daren Persson Stadium, a side unbeaten in the league going into the contest.
Recent addition Jordan Lashley was handed his debut as the Robins looked to build on from Saturday’s win.
The visitors were to have the first half chance of the game, an effort from outside of the area, wide of the mark.
The first chance for the Robins fell to Dan Waldon, a ball over the top unlocking the visiting defence, which saw the youngster through on goal, Joshua Mazfari with a terrific spot, denying the Robins from breaking the deadlock.
Jordan Lashley started to make his mark in a North Shields jersey, causing havoc down the left with his pace, crossing into the middle for Ryan Carr, who couldn’t quite guide his header on target.
GOAL ‘15 – NORTH SHIELDS 1-0 – DAN WALDON
The deadlock was broken on the quarter of an hour mark, Lashley again causing havoc, the visiting defence unable to contain, as he raced deep into Redcar territory before putting it on a plate for Waldon to finish from close range, a great goal to open the scoring.
MInutes later, a long ball through the middle of the pitch from Hodgson picking out Waldon, who with very little support, travelled towards goal, looking to pick his spot, before looking to find the bottom corner, Mazfari beaten only to be denied by the base of the post.
The Robins on top, with the visiting defence at 6s and 7s, Lashley continued to impress, once again using his pace to carve out an opportunity, no team-mate able to get onto the end of the ball into the middle.
GOAL ‘28 – NORTH SHIELDS 2-0 – WILL MCCAMLEY
The constant application of pressure paying off for the Robins, and the deserved extension of the lead, Lashley involved in the move with a maze run across the pitch, picking out McCamley, who cuts inside before curling an effort which travelled through a sea of bodies before nestling into the far bottom corner.
The visitors looked to hit back with a reply from conceding the second goal, an effort from distance, dealt with well by Hodgson.
Lashley continued to prove to be much for the visiting defence at times, picking out Carr, who struck his effort wide of the target.
Lee Mason tried his luck from the edge of the area but was unable to keep the effort on target.
On the stroke of halftime, Hodgson was on hand with a smart stop to deny Redcar from reducing the effort before the break.
Halftime upon us and nobody could argue with the scoreline, the Robins well worthy of the lead and the visitors appearing to be somewhat stunned by what they had faced in the first 45 minutes.
The second half started where the first left off, lashley terrorising the visiting defence, picking up the ball before cutting inside and fizzing an effort just over the top.
GOAL ‘50 – NORTH SHIELDS 3-0 – DAN WALDON
The perfect start to the second half, an early goal to all but seal victory, a deep corner from Danny Anderson, met in the middle by Euan Anderson, who hit the woodwork with his header, the ball rebounding to Waldon to finish the job.
GOAL ‘56 – REDCAR ATHLETIC 3-1 – JACK BLACKFORD
A superb finish, cutting in from the left and rifling the ball into the far top corner, a finish of sheer quality that just couldn’t be argued with.
More than half an hour left on the clock for the Robins to see out, they almost had a fourth of the evening, Danny Anderson seeing his freekick cleared off the line.
A tussle involving McCamley and Redcar’s Risbrough, resulted in McCamley being cautioned with nothing given to Risbrough.
The Robins had claims for a penalty waved away by the match official, Waldon tripped inside the penalty area, judged not to have been fouled.
Lewis Henry advanced from his position at full back, producing a great save from Mazfari for a corner, the resulting corner headed into the side netting by Coppen.
Ten minutes left on the clock, Lashley, the cause of issues all night, tried one last time to cap off his debut with a goal, a deep driving run, only to be denied by a last ditch tackle.
The Robins were able to see out the final few minutes without any major concerns, the visitors with a great opportunity to reduce the deficit to just one, but rushed the chance, which saw the attempt gathered well by Hodgson.
The match official brought the proceedings to an end, confirming the victory for the Robins, making to wins on the bounce, a performance more than deserving of victory, each man playing their part, not allowing the visitor’s to settle or build any real momentum from the opening exchanges.
A superb debut from Lashley, setting up the first two goals, a performance which deserved a goal of his own.
