Isuzu FA Vase Second Round

North Shields 3 – 1 Charnock Richard

‘Robins book place in third round draw’

With cup fever building up over the week, the big day had finally arrived at the Daren Persson Stadium with the scene set for the visit of Charnock Richard of the North West Counties Premier Division.

As kick off drew close, both teams took the pitch for the laying of wreaths, Brian Smith representing North Shields FC and John Brunton representing North Shields Juniors, everybody in attendance observed a two minutes silence as everybody took time to remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, following a moving rendition of the Last Post by young Joe, aged just 14.

As the game got underway, it was the visitors who made the brighter start, looking to play the ball about, keep possession and look for an opening to compromise.

A combination of a block from Forster and save from Hayes, kept the visitors out after possession was given away cheaply in the Robins own half.

It took 15 minutes to pass before the Robins were able to muster up the first chance of their own, Lashley picking up the ball on half way, running at the defence, creating havoc with his pace, squaring the ball to McCamley on the right, who saw his effort blocked.

The Robins  found their feet in the contest and started to take control, a flowing move down the right, the ball worked to McCamley whose cross looked destined for the head of Harmison in the middle, who was denied by a superb last ditch clearance.

The Robins hitting on the break, the ball over the top and a perfectly timed run from Jamie Holmes unlocked the Charnock defence, Holmes taking his chance early firing over the top from distance.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 1-0 Charnock Richard – Jamie Holmes ‘23

The Robins took the lead after the spell of pressure, Holmes given far too much space on the edge of the area, allowed to turn and shoot, a wicked deflection, saw the ball wrong foot Charnock’s keeper as the ball found its way to the back of the net.

The Robins could have had a second just minutes after taking the lead, another flowing move which saw the ball worked to Harmison, who once again denied by a last ditch clearance.

GOAL North Shields 1-1 CHARNOCK RICHARD – MATTHEW DAVIES ‘32

A goal of quality to draw the visitors level, the ball finding its way to Davies on the edge of the area, looking up and choosing to chip the ball into the back post, the ball sailing over Hayes, unable to recover in time, the ball glancing off the inside of the post and in.

Jamie Holmes flashed a corner across the face of goal, only requiring a touch that never came as the ball rolled out towards the far touchline.

In the final few moments of the first half, Lashley went down under pressure inside the penalty as he worked his way into the penalty area, claims for a penalty waved away and a corner kick awarded.

The first half brought to a conclusion, an even affair so far and a draw probably a fair result based on the play in the first half, both teams having chances and looking dangerous on the attack.

The second half started with Brian Smith making a triple change during the break, Dan Waldon, Dean Holmes and Lewis Suddick taking to the field in place of Euan Anderson, Jordan Lashley and Kyle Downey.

A sublime ball over the top was followed by an impeccable first touch inside the area by Jamie Holmes, his cross unable to find a team-mate.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 2-1 Charnock Richard – Dan Waldon ‘60

The Robins retook the lead, the triple change at half time paying dividends as the ball worked to Jamie Holmes, who picked out Dan Waldon in the middle who powered his header home from close range.

The Robins now in full swing looked to kill the game off, Dean Holmes with a perfectly weighted through ball, released McCamley who was denied by a smart block Charnock’s keeper rushing off his line.

A freekick into the middle, Coppen rose highest to head back across goal but nobody in red was running in the back post.

Kyle Hayes pulled off a magnificent save to deny the visitors an equaliser.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 3-1 Charnock Richard – Dan Waldon ‘81

Putting the game to bed, another free flowing move from the Robins, McCamley picking out Waldon in the middle, finishing first time from close range getting his second.

The Robins able to see out the remaining few minutes of normal time and nearly 10 minutes of additional time, a superb second half performance and inspired half time substitution seeing the Robins through and into the draw on Monday.

At full time, the Advanced Garage Doors MOTM was presented to Dan Waldon for a fantastic second half performance, showing how dangerous he is in front of goal.
