MATCH REPORT: Newcastle Blue Star triumph in FA Cup at first hurdle

North Shields v Newcastle Blue Star

Saturday 2nd August

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

Daren Persson Stadium

North Shields 0 – 2 Newcastle Blue Star

North Shields went looking to progress through the Extra Preliminary round of the FA Cup as

they hosted Newcastle Blue Star at the Daren Persson Stadium. North Shields were looking

for a fast start to the game and that is exactly what they got. Jordan Lashley, looking lively

down the right wing twice got past the full back and provided a dangerous cross but both

times the Blue Star defence were equal to it. Callum Elliott was then on hand to make a

good save to stop Newcastle Blue Star taking a lead against the early run of play as both

teams looked to settle into the game.

The major talking point of the first half happened after 20 minutes, as Callum Ross took a

heavy knock in a late challenge, the referee decided it was fair but Callum was unable to

continue after initially trying to run it off which meant Dean Holmes came on in the middle of

the park. This change didn’t disrupt the flow of North Shield attacks, mainly coming down the

right hand side. Regan Paterson was all set for a tap in from a dangerous cross but Jack

Walker just managed to get in the way. Slightly against the run of play Newcastle Blue Star

took the lead, Callum Elliott initially made a great save, but ex-Robin Dan Wilson was on

hand to fire home the rebound. North Shields tried to find a response before half time as a

strong penalty shout was waved away and a few dangerous corners were cleared by the

visiting defence.

It was a quiet start to the second half as neither team took control of the game. North Shields

had an early chance which Paterson hit just over the bar before Newcastle Blue Star

doubled their lead with a quick counter attack and a good chipped finish by Dan Lanning.

North Shields made a few substitutes to try and find a way back into the game but a few

stops in play seemed to disrupt any rhythm being found. The next major talking point came

in the 76 minute, substitute Lee Mason was fouled and looked to take a quick free kick. The

Blue Star defender decided to put his body in the way of the ball and took a kick as Mason

went to take the free kick. The referee then decided to red card Lee Mason and give no

punishment to the Blue Star player.

After this the ten men North Shields tried to find a way back into the game but only a few half

chances fell our way, none of which we were able to take. Despite a bright start to the game,

North Shields exit the FA Cup at the Extra Preliminary round stage.
