‘Robins cruise to victory on a Friday night under the lights’

A change from the norm for the Robins saw Brian Smith’s side take in a bit of Friday night football action under the lights at Sam Smith’s Park.

Kyle Hayes was handed the keeper shirt as he made his second debut for the club.

The narrative of the evening was set in place from the very start of the game as the Robins started off on the front foot, Dan Waldon presented with the first half chance, his touch ultimately letting him down inside the penalty area.

Shields should have taken the lead with around 10 minutes on the clock, Jamie Holmes carved open the home defence with a superb through ball, Lee Mason timing his run to perfection to get on the end of it, bearing in goal only to fire over the top, giving the home side a massive let off.

At the other end, the hosts rattled the woodwork with an effort at Hayes’ front post.

A quarter of an hour on the clock, Mason saw his headed effort cleared off the line by a last ditch clearance to deny the Robins taking the lead.

Hayes went route one, able to clear the home defence picking out McCamley in the process, through on goal his touch evading him at the crucial point of pulling the trigger, moments later Jamie Holmes fired an effort over from outside the area.

Another chance went begging for the Robins, the constant pressure slowly breaking down the home defence, Euan Anderson firing over from 6 yards out.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 1-0 – Own Goal ‘24

Eventually the breakthrough came halfway through the first half, McCamley too quick for his marker, creating space for himself before smashing an effort goal bound, Benfield defender trying in vain to keep the effort out but could only divert the ball into the top corner.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 2-0 – Ryan Carr ‘32

The advantage doubled when Ryan Carr headed from close range, a freekick into the penalty area, travelling through a sea of bodies, Carr on hand to head home.

More chances for the Robins saw Curtis Coppen, Kyle Downey and Will McCamley miss chances to extend the lead further ahead of half time.

A very much one sided first half from the Robins, a performance which could have seen Brian Smith’s go in at the break 4 or 5 goals up had it been for better finishing.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 3-0 – Jamie Holmes ‘47

A blistering start to the second half, a goal which all but put the game to bed, cutting in from the left and firing the ball into the roof of the net with the very first attack of the half.

Kyle Hayes was on hand with a superb double save to stop the hosts from getting a lifeline back into the game.

Benfields keeper spilled the ball inside the penalty to the feet of McCamley but the youngster was unable to capitalise.

The changes for the Robins saw Flyn Williamson replace Jamie Holmes, Adam Forster replace Lee Mason, Nick Cassidy replace Kyle Downey and Ben Harmison replace Dan Waldon.

Benfield keeper with a poor clearance, once again the Robins squandered the chance to put the game beyond doubt with around 15 minutes left on the clock.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 4-0 – Dean Holmes ‘78

A free flowing move seeing the ball worked to Carr in the middle, his effort saved well by the Benfield keeper but the ball fell into the path of Holmes, who was able tap home and put the seal on a fine victory for the Robins.

Mavis Adaowo replaced Dean Holmes in the final change for the Robins.

Adaowo found himself immediately involved in defensive duties battling well to deny the hosts a corner.

One last chance for the Robins saw Hayes pick out Adaowo who flicked the ball on to McCamley, through on goal, he looked to round the outrushing keeper, only to be denied by a crucial touch.

The match official brought the evening proceedings to an end, a commanding and confident performance from the Robins seeing them extend their unbeaten run to 6 games in the league.
