‘Priorymen put end to Robins unbeaten start’

North Shields 1 – 2 Guisborough Town

Following on from last week’s draw away to Crook Town, The Robins returned to the Daren Persson Stadium as they welcomed Guisborough Town to the Daren Persson Stadium.

Dan Iredale and his managerial team had to make a number of changes to the starting eleven due to Connor Oliver, David Palmer, Brad Hird all unavailable for selection, this saw Luke Salmon return and a first start for Joe Robson since his return to the club, Rio Joisce also started after joining on loan from Blyth Spartans.

The visitors got the game underway and in the opening exchanges forced Jonny Ball into making an early save.

The Robins first chance of the game, came from a freekick but were not able to capitalize on the opportunity presented to them.

Shields found themselves on the front foot, looking to push forward at every opportunity and not allow Guisborough to get any momentum.

Connor Gales used his strength well to hold the ball up and keep his marker at bay, before looking to pick out Dan Turner on the far side only to see his pass intercepted.

Twenty minutes in the best chance of the half fell to Dan Turner after good word from Tom Potter, who picked out Turner on the left, who cut inside before unleashing a stinging shot only to be matched by Robert Dean in goal for the Priorymen to tipped the ball over the top.

The visitors forced a couple of corners in succession which the Robins defence stood strong to and kept them out.

Moments later a through ball saw Callum Martin race through on goal, Jonny Ball rushed off his line to narrow the angle, as Ball looked to gather the ball in his grasp low down to his left, Martin took a tumble inside the area, to find himself being booked for simulation after a short discussion between the match official and linesman.

Dan Iredale found himself being forced into making an early change as Connor Gales was forced off with an eye injury.

MInutes later, the visitors were also forced into a change when Michael McGee replaced Cole Kiernan.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, quick thinking from a throw-in released Rio Joisce, who was able to turn and curl an left footed effort only for the effort to once again be matched by Guisboroughs’ Robert Dean.

Into stoppage time and the Robins had the ball in the back of the net, Luke Salmon sliding in to put the ball home only to be denied by the offside flag.

Half Time, the scores level, Shields looking the more likely of the two sides to have scored and created the more clear cut chances, only to be denied by good goalkeeping and the offside flag, Guisborough forced to defend for most of the half, but showed glimpses of danger on the counter attack.

The second half started with a flurry of chances for the Robins, firstly Joisce played through on goal almost immediately from the restart, as he beared down on goal a nasty bobble was his undoing as a combination of a covering defending and Robert Dean were able to keep him out, Secondly, a set piece whipped in by Tom Potter saw Paul Van-Zandvliet rise highest inside the penalty and head an effort back across goal, going narrowly past the wrong side of the far post.

A counter attack from the visitors presented them with a great opportunity to take the lead only for Ball to deny them with a neat save, the resulting corner not able to cause any danger for the Robins danger as it flew straight out of the play.

GOAL 63’ NORTH SHIELDS – TOM POTTER, 1-0

Regan Paterson beat the offside trap latching onto a inch perfect through ball, drove towards goal only to be upended inside the penalty area, the match official pointing to the penalty area despite the appeals of the visiting defence. Tom Potter composed himself and slotted the ball home from 12 yards, Robert Dean going the right way.

Another through ball, saw Potter through on goal once again splitting through the Guisborough defence, this time judged to have made his run slightly early and ruled offside.

Paul Van-Zandvliet went on a surging run down the right hand side, gliding past three or four Guisborough players, before picking out Potter with a pass, who was unable to pick out a cross into the box.

A double change saw Antonio Agosthino and Jack Leonard replace Rio Joisce and Tom Potter respectively with around 15 minutes plus stoppage time left on the clock.

GOAL 81’ GUISBOROUGH TOWN – TYRONE O’NEILL, 1-1

A ball into the penalty area, towards the far post, a Guisborough Town player went down inside the penalty area and the match official pointed towards the penalty spot, Tyrone O’Neill stepped up and slotted the ball home to draw the away side level.

Sloppy play from Shields in the middle of the park saw possession given away, the visitors unable to make the most of the opportunity as the effort on goal did not trouble the Robins goal.

In the dying moments of the game, a freekick awarded to the Robins, presented them with an opportunity to restore the lead, Regan Patersonw with the effort, driven straight into the wall.

Deep into stoppage time, the visitors won a freekick on halfway, as the Robins defence put the blockers on a Guisborough Town counter attack.

GOAL 90+11’ GUISBOROUGH TOWN – EDWARD THOMAS, 1-2

The resulting free kick, floated in towards the far side of the box to be headed back across the box to the feet of Thomas, who found himself in yards of space, to slot the ball back across goal into the corner of the net and give the visitors the lead.

No time left for the Robins to rescue something from the game, the game brought to a conclusion, a difficult one to take as the Robins had enough chances over the course of the 90 minutes to win the game but over the course of the 90 minutes ultimately didn’t do enough.
