North Shields FC can today confirm that goalkeeper Alex Curran has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.
Alex signed for the Robins in November 2024 and went on to make 11 appearances for the club, quickly becoming a valued and respected member of the squad. His final match, against local rivals Whitley Bay, saw him turn back the clock with a series of stunning, cat-like saves—proving once again the class and composure that defined his career.
A true stalwart of the Northern League, Alex’s journey in the game began at the age of 20. Over the past 16 years, he’s represented a number of clubs with distinction, including Ryton, Whickham, Tow Law, Shildon, Newcastle Blue Star, Blyth Spartans, and most recently Crook Town. Everywhere he’s played, Alex has earned a reputation as a reliable, hard-working, and immensely talented shot-stopper.
Since arriving at North Shields, Alex has not only brought his experience and ability to the team, but also a professionalism and humility that made an instant impact in the dressing room. He has led by example, supported his teammates, and carried himself with integrity—always giving everything for the badge.
Alex is also widely admired off the pitch for his work with the Newcastle United Foundation, where he continues to make a positive impact on young lives across the region. His passion for the game and his commitment to helping others is something that truly sets him apart.
Though his time on the pitch has come to an end, Alex’s legacy lives on through the lives he’s touched, the teammates he’s inspired, and the fans who’ve cheered him on over the years. Football has been lucky to have him—and so have we.
From everyone at North Shields FC: thank you, Alex. You’ll always be a part of the Robins family. We wish you nothing but happiness and success in the next chapter of your journey.
