Grangetown Boys Club 0-2 North Shields – Match Report

North Shields ended their recent woes and have advanced to the League Cup semi-finals after a 2-0 victory away at Grangetown Boys Club.

Carr knocked in a header in the opening fifteen minutes, before Waldon bagged his first goal of the season to secure the win for the Robins.

The Robins made a bright start and created the first opening inside five minutes when a cross into the area was only partially cleared, allowing Regan to strike from the edge of the box, but his effort flew over.

After a short period of sustained pressure, we got our first. Sampson did well to deliver a dangerous ball towards the far post, where Carr was on hand to convert and give Shields the advantage.

Shields continued to play with confidence and almost doubled their lead midway through the half. Anderson produced an excellent long ball from inside his own half to pick out Regan, who controlled the ball well before firing at goal, but Joseph Hood made a strong save.

However, the run of play shifted in the host’s favour midway through the half. Grangetown’s first big opportunity came on 30 minutes when Benjamin Urwin attempted a half-volley from distance, but it drifted wide. At the other end, Shields continued to threaten, with Sampson again involved as he played Suddick into the box, though his effort was gathered by Hood.

There was late drama before the break when the hosts were awarded a penalty following a challenge involving Elliott, Fam Jatta had the goalkeeper rooted to the spot, but he fired wide of the target to ensure Shields went into the interval ahead.

HALF-TIME: Grangetown Boys Club 0-1 North Shields

Shields made a strong start to the second hal, doubling their lead five minutes after the restart. Waldon found space at the near-post and struck a powerful left-footed effort into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

The game settled after the second goal, with Shields controlling possession and limiting the hosts to few clear opportunities, preferring to see the game out instead of aggressively launching attacks.

Shields would have a final effort in the 87th minute, but Mason fired wide from close range.

The win means we progress into the final four of the tournament, and a crunch match against Shildon awaits on Tuesday, but not before our final league fixture of the season against Newcastle Blue Star.
