MATCH PREVIEW – Coventry United (A)

It’s time for the big one, folks. This weekend, our Robins go away to Coventry United in the Fifth Round of the Isuzu FA Vase.

Down to the last 16, there is a real possibility that we could be on our way to Wembley, like we did in 2015. Nothing is decided, however, and we must focus on the opponent ahead.

Coventry United is a team based in… you guessed it, Coventry. They’re currently fifth in the GCE Hire Fleet United Counties Football League Premier Division South. They play at Butts Park Arena, which is the shared home of Coventry Rugby.

Butts Park is sure to be a factor in this game; the size of the ground and the artificial pitch make a huge difference of the conditions in which the game will be played. If tickets for the game are sold out, it’s sure to be an amazing atmosphere – a pressure-cooker environment. The Robins have dealt with large crowds this season, notably at Whitley Bay on Boxing Day. I personally don’t believe the crowd will be too big, as Coventry City is playing at the same time on Saturday.

Although Shields lost last week against Shildon, it was a good experience playing on a 4G pitch, before playing in the Vase. Our last game in the Vase vs Chadderton was also played on a 4G pitch, so Shields are no strangers to the impact that has on the game.

Reece Wanless chipped in with a goal last week, and he’ll be looking to add to his momentum coming into Saturday. A return from injury for Ryan Carr is sure to be a boost to the Robins’ options for the game.

The supporters’ bus will be leaving the Daren Persson Stadium at 8 am on the day of the game, so if you’re coming down for the ride, please don’t be late, or you’ll likely miss the departure.

As always, if you’re making the trip, safe travels, and thank you for all of your support!
