North Shields FC are safely into the next round of the FA Vase after a tense afternoon in Greater Manchester, beating Cheadle Town FC 3–1 on penalties following a 0–0 draw at the Ground Up Solutions Stadium.
A battle from the first whistle
The Robins made the journey west with a strong following behind them, the club sharing the message: “We’re on our way — let’s bring the noise and back the lads!” The travelling fans did just that, giving the players a lift throughout a tightly contested cup tie.
The first half saw few clear chances for either side, with both teams cancelling each other out in midfield. Shields kept their shape well, moving the ball patiently and looking to exploit space on the flanks. The home side threatened from set pieces, but goalkeeper and back line stood firm to keep things level at the break.
Tense second half, defiant defence
After the restart, Shields looked sharper and began to dictate possession. Several dangerous crosses from wide areas caused problems for Cheadle, but the finishing touch proved elusive. As the clock ticked down, both teams pushed for a late winner, yet defences remained in control. North Shields having the better chances of the game with the Cheadle keeper making 3 good and strong stops keeping the visitors out.
Despite extra effort from both sides, the deadlock couldn’t be broken — sending the tie to penalties.
Penalty shootout drama
With the pressure on, Shields kept their nerve from twelve yards. Confident strikes and 3 vital saves from the Robins’ keeper, Callum Elliott turned the shootout their way, while Cheadle faltered from the spot. When the decisive kick hit the net, the travelling supporters erupted — North Shields were through, winning 3–1 on penalties.
