EBAC Northern League Division One

North Shields 3 – 2 Marske United

‘Robins come out on top’

Looking to build on from last Friday night’s commanding win over Newcastle Benfield, the Robins welcomed old friends Marske United to the Daren Persson Stadium in a contest which saw 7th place take on 4th place.

Brian Smith handed a second debut to Aaron Steavens along with Liam Marrs and Darren Lough returning to the starting lineup.

It was the Robins who started the brighter of the two sides, the first chance of the game falling to Dean Holmes with five minutes on the clock, fluid build up play, saw the ball worked to Holmes who fired an effort straight at the keeper.

Lee Mason was presented with a great opportunity to open the scoring, the ball worked into the middle, Mason able to bring it down on his chest only for the visiting defence to recover just in the nick of time.

A double chance for the Robins went begging, firstly Dan Waldon was denied from a tight angle after being played through by Mason, from the resulting corner, the Robins saw the ball cleared off the line.

At the other end, Aaron Steavens was called into action, forced to tip over an effort to deny the visitors.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 1-0 – Jamie Holmes ‘25

The breakthrough came halfway through the first half, the fluid build up play from the Robins paying off, Jamie Holmes playing a one two with Will McCamley creating space for himself before slotting the ball home to give the Robins a deserved lead.

GOAL MARSKE UNITED 1-1 – Kyran Clark ‘27

The visitors hit back almost immediately, a mix up at the back, provided Clark with an easy finish as he found himself through on an empty goal, drawing the visitors level.

Dean Holmes forced a superb save out of the Marske keeper, a volleyed effort from outside the area, looked destined for the back of the net, Will Cowey at full stretch had different ideas, tipping the effort around the post.

Moments later, Dan Waldon fired an effort agonisingly wide of the target as the Robins looked to regain the lead before the break.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 2-1 – Euan Anderson ‘41

With the game looking destined to be level at the break, the Robins were awarded with a free kick on the edge of the area, calls for the foul to have been inside the area waived away by the match officials, Jamie Holmes curled in the freekick to the back post, Euan Anderson was on hand as he climbed highest to power his header back across goal and beyond Cowey.

The Robins with the lead at the break, fully deserved on the basis of the first half performance, having created the more clear cut chances and looking the more dangerous of the two sides, the visitors created very little but able to capitalise from a mistake.

The second half started with Will McCamley curling an effort wide of the target after another piece of build up play from the Robins.

The visitors hit the woodwork, a neat pass cutting through the Robins defence, Marske dangerman Kyran Clark timed his run to perfection, bringing the ball under control, Steavens rushed out making himself big, shutting down the angle as Clark’s effort rebounded off the post.

The first changes of the afternoon saw the introductions of Jordan Lashley and Adam Forster in place of Jamie Holmes and Darren Lough.

A counter attacking move from the Robins broke down at the crucial point, as McCamley drove deep into the Marske half before sliding the ball through to Mason, whose touch evaded him inside the penalty area.

Mason saw a headed effort travel wide of the post as the Robins looked to add a third goal of the afternoon.

GOAL MARSKE UNITED 2-2 – Kyran Clark ‘73

The visitors drew themselves level for the second time of the afternoon, a throw-in from the right, before a surging run, the ball slipped into the path of Clark, who was quickest to it and able to tap home.

A second double change of the afternoon for the Robins saw the introductions of Lewis Suddick and Ben Harmison in place of Lee Mason and Dan Waldon with 15 minutes remaining.

GOAL NORTH SHIELDS 3-2 – Will McCamley ‘81

Freekick from the right swung in from the right from Suddick, Curtis Coppen headed it back into the middle, where the ball is only cleared as far as Ryan Carr who fired an effort goal bound, which the visiting defence scrambled off the line only far as McCamley who smashed it home to give the Robins the lead for the third time of the afternoon.

The visitors had a chance to salvage a point, the visitors turning defence into attack, the ball worked forward to Clark on a hat-trick, through on goal but only find the side netting.

The Robins were able to see out the four minute added time and ensure that the 3 points stayed in North Tyneside as the match official blew the full time whistle, bringing the end to a great game of football from both sides.
