North Shields 0-2 Sunderland Ryhope Colliery Welfare
Flat Robins lose ground in title chase.
The game kicked off with a cagey opening stage, the first feature of the game being a passage of play down the left between Chris McDonald and Callum Smith. The pair made their way down the line and played a ball into Dan Wilson who was adjudged to be offside.
The first decent chance of the game came from the visiting side. With the Ryhope attack sliding their striker in behind in the 12th minute, the goal was gaping if not for a fantastic challenge by Shields debutant Ben Milburn to avert the danger.
Another scare for the Robins came about just two minutes later. A powerful strike from the left hand side from the Ryhope forward James Ellis crashed against the crossbar.
The 20th minute saw Shields win a 20 yard freekick thanks to Smith. The set piece was struck well by Andy Cartwright but visiting ‘keeper James Winter held it well.
The visitors settled into a direct style of play which seemed all to easy for Shields to sweep up until the 26th minute. A long ball from deep midfielder Danni Lay was agonisingly fumbled by Milburn, to which Ellis latched on to and finished well. An uncharacteristic mistake from an otherwise excellent Milburn so far.
The first half carried on as it began, with neither side looking hugely threatening until the 39th minute when yet again the Ryhope attack struck the crossbar. This time Karl Southern was denied by the woodwork.
Half time North Shields 0-1 Ryhope
Ryhope kicked off the second half but it was the Robins who made the first chance of the half. Forster excellently dribbled his way into the area and forced a foul inside the area, winning Shields a chance to get themselves back in the game.
Dan Wilson stood up, struck it well but Ryhope number one James Winter was more than equal to the strike, and excellently palmed the strike around the post.
The missed penalty would prove to be fatal for Shields as immediately the visitors ran up the other end and doubled their lead through Ellis again.
The remainder of the game saw a few half chances for Shields, with the lion’s share of the possession and pressure. However the Ryhope defence stood firm, with the ever present commandment from Winter suffocating the rest of the attacks.
