Bishop Auckland 1-5 North Shields
The hosts got the game going and it was only a few seconds before the possession was turned over by Gary Ormston, who drove down the right and pulled it back to Ryan Carr on the edge of the box, but the shot was blocked.
Just 4 minutes later and the hosts got their first chance of the game, Bradley Mills hung a ball in from a wide set piece, the header was cleared to the left of the Shields goal and a cross-come-shot won a corner for Bishop as Olly Marshall tipped it over.
As the game rolled into the 7th minute, so too did North Shields into the Bishop box. A familiar long throw from left back Chris McDonald found Dan Wilson, who held off his man, shifted the ball to his left and drilled a pass across the box. Brad Hird the recipient, turned the ball goalward and it was 1-0.
In the 10th minute another chance materialised for the Robins. Once again Shields worked the ball down the right-hand side, and a chance fell at the edge of the box to David Robinson, who’s strike flew over.
Goal number two came in the 14th minute. A quick turnover in possession from Carr found Cam Cunningham in the middle. The number 7 played an excellent ball to the right to find Wilson, who took the ball inside on his left and curled a strike into the top left-hand corner.
Chances came later in the half for Robinson and Cunningham drawing strong saves from Nick Liversedge in the 27th minute.
Just two minutes later and the hosts had replied. A long-distance shot was turned over by Marshall, and the resulting corner found the head of Josh Rowbotham well, who nodded home easily.
A muted end to the first half saw Ben Milburn enter the referee’s book in the 45th minute, but the score remained unchanged at the break.
The second half started much as the first did. With the Robins immediately fashioning a chance for Wilson on the edge of the area. The shot was tame however and rolled kindly into Liversedge’s hands.
In the 56th minute the hosts almost levelled. A freekick was given away on the edge of the box by Ormston. Up stepped Wayne Whitfield who sent an excellent curling strike crashing off the underside of the crossbar, bouncing off Marshall’s line and out.
Two minutes later saw the game’s second yellow card. This time assistant manager Anth Woodhouse going into the book for his prolonged protests.
In the 61st minute the game was put to bed. An Andy Cartwright set piece excellently found Wilson in the box who headed goalward. Liversedge made the initial save but was helpless to stop the rebound and the Shields number nine made it 3-1.
The skies darkened and so too did the game for Bishop. A mere two minutes later, Robinson threaded a pinpoint ball through to Cunningham into the left hand channel. The young midfielder bombed into the box and smashed home down to the keepers left to add a fourth to the Shields tally.
The 76th minute saw Marc Nash make his first change of the afternoon. Callum Smith replaced Dan Wilson
Another change for the Robins in the 80th minute, Jack Leonard replaced Ryan Carr
It would take only two minutes for Leonard to make an impact on the game. In the 82nd minute a fantastic pass down the left-hand side found Callum Smith who took one touch, and lobbed Liversedge from outside the box. Grazing the post as it went in the finish was representative of the performance from the Robins in the second half: oozing with class and confidence.
The final substitution for North Shields came in the 83rd minute with Brad Hird making way for youngster Daniel Turner
